Katniss’s Reading List

I found this list on the Chapter’s Teen website today and I don’t agree with their choices. The editors at Chapters compiled a list of dark, post-apocalyptic, dystopian books that are similar to The Hunger Games. Many of them are great picks (even although Battle Royale is nowhere to be seen), but I’m not sure they’re the right books to recommend to Katniss. I don’t know about you, but if I was a contestant in the Hunger Games with time to read, I’d want something light and fluffy to make me forget about my grim reality for a few hours.

My picks for Katniss would include:

Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney

It’s a weird choice, but it would be a quick read (she doesn’t have a lot of spare time) and it’s really funny! Katniss needs something silly in her life.  I don’t think that girl cracked a smile the entire trilogy.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares

Katniss really needs some girl friends. Maybe this warm-and-fuzzy book about four best friends who are always there for each other through the good and the bad would help improve her female relationships.

Audrey, Wait! by Robin Benway

This book about a girl who becomes suddenly famous after her ex writes a hit song about her would resonate with Katniss and her own unwanted fame. Audrey, Wait! is hilarious enough to make even Katniss chuckle. Maybe.

Graceling by Kristin Cashore

Katniss would be able to see herself in Katsa, who is also a strong-willed and deadly protagonist in a tough fantasy world.  Unlike Katniss, Katsa fares better in her romantic entanglements, so maybe she could learn a thing or two from this book.

Beauty Queens by Libba Bray
This book has already been mentioned on the blog, but it’s a perfect pick for Katniss. This story of girls surviving in a harsh environment and fighting against society’s expectations is also a brilliant satire of powerful corporations. And if there’s anything Katniss loves, it’s defying expectations and sticking it to the man.

The Vampire Diaries
And if Katniss could watch TV, I’d encourage her to watch The Vampire Diaries. She is sure to relate to a show about a love triangle and fighting evil. Plus it’s just good fun (and we all know she could use some).
